Dover Sea Sports Centre, Dover
Sector: Leisure and Community
Completed: 2010
Construction Value: £0.5million
Involvement: RIBA stages 0-7
PROJECT:
The contemporary building is situated within the historical setting of Dover Castle and operated by Dover Sea Sports Development Trust, which is a not for profit organisation. This hub serves both the Clubs and Societies using the waters and beach of Dover Harbour and the community at large. It also forms the initial part of the regeneration of the Dover Sea Front. This Project was funded primarily through grants and donations. This building replaces a number of older utilitarian buildings and improves the visual amenity of the beach and adjacent areas
RTPI South East region award 2010
LABC Building excellence award 2010
AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
During the detailed design stage, the key challenges included agreeing a foundation solution for the beach location of the building (a reinforced concrete raft as the presence of the ancient sea wall below the beach prevented piling), consideration of suitable materials to meet the required aesthetic quality and the severe coastal environment, and consideration of improved environmental and accessibility issues in the design along with updating the design to comply with regulatory changes. Building Control were actively involved at all stages of this work culminating in a conditional approval in August 2007 with conditions for structural calculations and Part L. These conditions were cleared in December 2007 and February 2008 respectively. Jenner (Contractors) Ltd commenced work on site in July 2007 with initial completion planned for May 2008.
